Most of us will be in an assumption that we are mentally strong. But, are we really strong-minded or dodging and lying to ourselves that we are mentally strong?

Well, what are the aspects one can consider to claim themselves strong-willed? Before we jump into that, let’s look at a situation to know why Thomas Alva Edison is considered a mentally strong person.

Thomas Alva Edison is one of the famous and most prolific inventors of all time. He had a lot of remarkable inventions that still have an enormous influence on modern life.

However, in 1914 a massive explosion erupted in Thomas Alva Edison’s factory. A fire broke out at the West Orange laboratory destroying 13 buildings. It almost damaged everything. Edison underwent a loss of 23 million dollars. In the very same laboratory, he was also working on a prototype for years.

With this incident, the way he looked at it shows how tough he was as a person mentally. He just made a simple statement, “Thank goodness all our mistakes were burned up. Now we can start fresh again.”

One of the best qualities a mentally tough person has is that he/she will know how to handle oneself in the worst situation and keep a positive approach. The fact of the matter is not everyone will be mentally strong right from birth. There are a few habits that can be followed to transform, from a mentally weak person to a mentally strong person. Let’s drive into the major 5 factors that a strong-minded person will possess.

  1. Embracing change

Are we open to change? Here the way we look at change matters a lot.

It is a known fact that the Eagles have the longest lifespan of their species. It can survive a life of up to 70 years. Nevertheless, to reach that age, an eagle should certainly make a very difficult decision. In its 40th year, the eagle’s long and flexible talons can no longer grab prey that serves as food. Their long and sharp beak also bends to an extent where they will not be able to eat its food. Due to their thick feathers, the old-aged and heavy wings stick to the chest and make it difficult to fly.

With this, the eagle is left with mere two options. DIE or go through a painful process of CHANGE!

The eagle leaves no stone unturned till it finishes the process that lasts for 150 days (5 months). Initially, it flies to a mountain top and knocks its beak against a rock until that plucks out by itself. Then the eagle waits for the new beak to grow back after which it plucks out its talons. With the grown talons, the eagle then starts to pluck its old-aged feathers. With this, finally, the eagle takes its famous flight of rebirth and LIVES for 30 more years!!

Thus, a mentally strong person eventually accepts every difficult change and passes through the change to make themself strong.

2. Establishing boundaries

When was the last time we literally had to bite the bullet to do something (maybe, work) that spoiled our entire day and all the other scheduled works?

And then we later regretted pondering that this one work has stopped us from doing the other works at our best. If this is something that happens often, then it’s a sad truth to know that you are not mentally strong. A strong-minded person will know their line of control. Such people will know for which work to say yes or no.

They will know in which conversation they should be a part of and not. Likewise, when it comes to their diet, they will know what is good for their health and eat accordingly. That self-controlling tendency defines a boundary here. In a nutshell, such people are very selective.

Stay tuned for the next blog to know about the other 3 aspects of a mentally strong person!
